In December 1917 Augustus John was assigned to the Canadian infantry as a war artist. The principal outcome was to be a huge mural for Lord Beverbrook, but like so many of his ambitious projects it remained unfinished. However, he did make a number of fine portraits of his companions, many of these brown ink drawings in sketchbooks.

This example is a portrait study of his batman (a personal servant or attendant assigned to a commissioned officer), used for a later painting, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
