Muirhead Bone's first solo exhibition, sales from which helped fund the 1901 move to London, was held at his friend Winstanley Pearson's rooms at Cambridge. Bone made several etchings and drawings in the city in the early years of the decade, some of them of light industrial buildings and sheds, such as Moore's Yard, Foster's Boathouse and this fine pen study of some brick and timber buildings. This economical drawing would have been made on the spot, perfectly showcasing Bone's outstanding draughtsmanship.
