Study for The Brittany Conscript Leaving Home
£850
In 1845, aged 23, following visits to Brittany in 1841-2, Goodall painted his first major oil painting, The Brittany Conscript Leaving Home (sold Sotheby's 21 June 1983, Private Collection). The picture was shown at the British Institution in 1846, receiving great acclaim. This head study for the conscripted young man is drawn with youthful energy, freedom and assured draftsmanship.
