Albert Caudieux on the Stage

Albert Caudieux on the Stage

£450

In 1968 London's Mercury Gallery exhibited a number of drawings from one of Augustus John's early sketchbooks, recording theatre or music hall performances. Seen from above, presumably from the circle, John has somehow, in a few pencil strokes, captured the stage uplighting on the performers' costumes and features. At least one of these drawings is of Albert Caudieux (1850-1917), an actor, singer and comedian, who performed in Parisian Belle Epoque cafés-concerts and was later depicted by Toulouse-Lautrec. Identified in 1968 as Man in a Top Hat, this drawing is likely also of Caudieux. John was in Paris in 1898, and may have seen Caudieux performing then.
