This is a unique, part-hand-drawn proof of the second state of six of this well-known Spanish-themed print, with extensive pen and sepia ink additions, notably in the lower centre and upper left of the subject. The print is signed on the plate area in pen and ink and dated " - 5.10.33" by the artist, and inscribed in pencil by Arthur Mitchell on the old mount as follows, from left to right: "Plate now steel-faced. W. 59 - 2nd of 6 states - The only proof thus. (Figure of woman with pitcher etched in. Fountain trough & two pitchers & lowest steps are added with pen); "Fuente del Pilar, Burgos."; "Wr. 59 II of 6 (Touched proof)"; "Drypoint by Sir Wm. Russell Flint. R.A., P.R.W.S., R.E. 1932"; "A.M.".
The present work was lot 138 in the Sotheby's sale of "The Arthur Mitchell Collection of Drypoints by Sir William Russell Flint", 25th October 1973, purchased by P.H. Liechti, as were three other Flint drypoints listed on this website.
