Study for a Portrait
1092
The present drawing is on laid paper with a section of a watermark, which would appear to be part of a Georgian period Strasburg Lily.
In its composition and pose, this portrait study may appear to relate to some of Lawrence's portraits of the Duke of Wellington, although it does not correspond precisely to any specific painting. Although small compositional studies of this type are known and have appeared on the market, doubt has been expressed about whether this one is by the artist himself, so it is listed here as circle of Sir Thomas Lawrence.
Another possibility is that it might be a study for an artist's self-portrait, with the subject drawing in a large sketchbook.
Dimensions:
c.1810-30
Graphite on laid paper, with part of what is probably a Georgian Strasburg Lily watermark
Old dealer label with attribution to Sir Thomas Lawrence on backboard
