Study for Windsor: The Queen

Study for Windsor: The Queen

£350

This unmistakable and vigorous sketch by David Cox is thought to be a preliminary study for larger drawings, watercolours and an oil painting depicting Queen Victoria driving in the park at Windsor Castle. It could be an early idea for the subject which was further developed in the larger black chalk drawing, 'Windsor - the Queen', formerly owned by Sir Robert Witt and now in the Courtauld Gallery collection (shown in the David Cox bicentenary exhibition 1983, no. 74, and illustrated in the catalogue, p. 88).

The present work was sold at Sotheby's auction of Drawings and Watercolours from the collection of the Late Sir John and Lady Witt on 19th February 1987, lot 127. It is inscribed in pencil, probably in Sir John Witt's hand, on the old mount with "1432 in ROMW Collection" (probably referring to the larger work?) and stamped with Sir John Witt's collector's stamp on the backing sheet and on the back of the drawing.
