Firebird - Stravinsky in rehearsal

Firebird - Stravinsky in rehearsal

£450

A survey exhibition of James Fitton's work was held at Dulwich Picture Gallery in 1987. Variations of this subject featured as numbers 36, 37 and 103, one an ink and wash drawing and the other two oil paintings. The poses vary slightly, the closest being Firebird II, a large painting in oils on board. Fitton made a series of studies from memory after attending a performance given by Stravinsky conducting Firebird, and later watching the composer rehearsing it in a television programme.

The present work appears to be a mixture of print, extensive scratching out, and white paint. It was previously in the collection of John Webley (1926-2023), who worked for Dame Marie Rambert (1880-1982) and was her social companion. It may previously have belonged to Marie Rambert.
