Muirhead and Gertrude Bone made six visits to Spain between 1924 and 1928, immersing themselves in the history of the country and of Spanish Catholic art and architecture, and collaborating on Gertrude's substantial publication, "Old Spain", illustrated with 154 of Muirhead's drawings. While Muihead made many rich monochrome drawings, many of the Spanish works had the addition of colour.
Santiago, the ancient capital of Galicia, in north-west Spain, has its origin in the shrine of St James the Great, now the cathedral and the destination of pilgrimages since the 9th century. Here, Bone has typically reflected his humanity and interest in the inhabitants of a place by focusing as much on the people of the city as its historic fabric.
This drawing was a Christmas gift to Sir Hugh Walpole (1884-1941). Walpole was encouraged as a novelist by Henry James and Arnold Bennett and became a best-selling author in the UK and North America in his lifetime, but has been largely neglected since his death. He was a patron of the visual arts and left much of his collection to the Tate Gallery.
