A Girl wearing Folk Dance Costume

A Girl wearing Folk Dance Costume

£625

Being largely homebound, Hunt would find inventive ways to vary his figure subjects, putting his models in national costume. Examples are A Circassian Lady (sold Sotheby's 23rd November 2006, lot 260), A Woman of Flanders (sold Cheffin's 12th September 2018, lot 108) and A Lady in Swiss Costume (also on this website). Here, a girl, quite possibly his daughter Emma, is portrayed in a dirndl, a folk dance costume traditionally worn in Bavaria.

On the back of this large watercolour, Hunt has written his address as 55 Burton Street, Burton Crescent, London, where he was living from 1842-45. Emma was ten to fourteen years of age when they lived there.
