Squirrell’s preparatory pencil sketches for etchings and watercolours, made on the spot in front of his subjects, often with colour notes, are some of his freshest, most direct works. He made at least one watercolour of Canterbury Cathedral, with which the present drawing may be associated.

Inscribed under the mount by the artist, "Canterbury. W. end of Cathedral". There is a certificate of authenticity on the backboard, signed by the artist's daughter Annette Kenny (nee Squirrell), and "Canterbury W. End of Cathedral" and "12/85"
