Coniston Water
Coniston Water
Leslie Moffat Ward R.E
1228
Ward was a versatile printmaker, and this this charming lithograph, produced in an edition of twenty prints, nostalgically evokes sailing holidays and eternal summers, in contrast to the dark etchings of shipping in Poole Harbour, so characteristic of his early work.
This 1952 print brings to mind Arthur Ransome’s 1930 novel ‘Swallows and Amazons’, set in the English Lake District, specifically on Windermere and around Coniston Water. This story of children’s adventures while sailing there has remained enormously into the present century.
