This lyrical watercolour is one of at least two versions of this enigmatic subject that are known to exist. The other, smaller version was with Abbott and Holder, and once owned by Samuel Prout.
In this scene, it appears that an elegantly dressed man has left his clothes in an archway to go for a dip in the inviting cool water of a lake in the Roman Campagna.
