Tessa Newcomb made a number of these charming painted driftwood and collage fishing boats to sell to raise pocket money for her children. This one unusually features a large chequed fish being towed by the boat. As usual the boat is identified by an IP registration number. At the time Newcomb lived by the coast at Southwold. Her partner's mother, Margaret Mellis, who had lived in same house, collected driftwood from the neighbouring beach to make her driftwood sculptures.
Part of a sentence from an old English song lyric titled 'Virginia' is attached to the boat as an element of the collage. It reads "...pine... Say I would give you my soul... If...". The full sentence reads as follows:
"Say I would give you my soul
If I could but stroll
Where the flowers nod to you."
