To paraphrase Richard Lockett, in his 1985 book about the works of Samuel Prout (1783-1852), he was an artist who was generally at his best in monochrome. The present work exemplifies Prout's fine draughtsmanship. Like contemporaries such as Peter De Wint, he made repeated studies of specific tree species so that he could convincingly paint them into watercolours.
