Landscape with a village and church
This unfinished watercolour has previously been described as by John Middleton, but is here attributed to De Wint. Although unsigned, as De Wint's works generally were and befitted an unfinished work, the panoramic subject of a church and houses among trees, the colours, and handling of pencil, detail and washes are all more traits of De Wint than of Middleton. Another contender for the attribution might be William Leighton Leitch, whose landscape studies on rough paper have been mistaken for De Wint's (see the example in the Met) and have something of the dry, less fluid quality of this work, compared with De Wint's most lyrical studies.
