Malpas on the Fal River
Malpas on the Fal River
1016
The scene is easily recognisable to anyone visiting Cornwall's Fal River today. The label on the backboard of the original frame indicates that this work was drawn when Bone lived in King's Bench Walk in 1902-3, or before. The label, perhaps written by someone working for a gallery who was prone to inaccuracies: Bone's address is incorrect (he lived at No.1, not No.12), and the Fal River has one "l". Having moved to London in 1901, Bone was given his breakthrough first solo exhibition in the following year, staged by Oscar Wilde's executor, Robert Ross, at his Carfax Gallery in Ryder Street, including etchings, drawings and paintings. We can assume the present work was shown in this exhibition.
