Figures in a Wood
1153
Philip Wilson Steer painted a number of oils of figures dancing or partying in the woods, including ones on wooden panels, as is the present work, which appears to show some elegantly dressed Victorians or Edwardians in a sunlit glade.
The handling of this work, with its vigorous, sweeping brushstrokes, and strongly coloured highlights against a dark, shaded woodland interior, would not seem to be Steer's, and is not unrelated to the subject matter and style of French artists, notably Adolphe Monticelli.
