Round a Venetian Brazier
Round a Venetian Brazier
1049
The present print is signed in ink and in the plate. Inscribed "PC" (for Print Collectors' Club, known as PCC) in the plate. Underneath the mount, the sheet is inscribed as follows from left to right (pen and ink by the artist, pencil probably by Arthur Mitchell): "11-27.11.35 WRF" in pencil and "8" in pen and ink; "W.65. III of 3" and "Round a Venetian Brazier" in pencil; "Paper: J. Whatman 1809" in ink; "S.43781" in pencil. The paper is watermarked "J. Whatman 1809".
This is the third and final state of this print, which was produced in an edition of 100 for the Print Collectors' Club (PCC) in 1935. The present work may be a unique proof or one of those reserved for the artist, before the edition.
Affiliated to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (RE), the PCC, for many years, annually commissioned a print from a member of the RE. This grew to three prints as membership of the PCC grew. The artists were asked to include the PCC logo in their plates.
This print may be identified with lot 160 in Sotheby's sale of the "Arthur Mitchell Collection of Drypoints by Sir William Russell Flint", 25th October 1973 (not illustrated in the catalogue, but purchased by P. H. Liechti, as were two other Flint drypoints listed on this website).
