The medieval town of Saint-Maurice, in the Canton du Valais, Switzerland, sits in a gorge between a cliff face and the Rhone. The castle and bridge survive as Prout saw them, probably on his 1824 tour to Italy, although the tower at the other end of the bridge has disappeared.
The castle was built between the 15th and 17th centuries and guards the entrance to the gorge. An engraving by J.B. Allen after a Prout view of the bridge and castle (seen from the other bank of the river opposite Prout's vantage point for the present work), was included in the landscape Annual for 1830. The present work would have been drawn on the spot in front of the subject.
Prout was an outstanding landscape and architectural draughtsman and some would say he was at his best with a pencil, where his skill is particulalry evident.
