San Giacomo Maggiore, Bologna
San Giacomo Maggiore, Bologna
Thomas Heaphy the Elder
(attributed to)
1064
This sensitive and finely drawn study of the medieval Basilica San Giacomo Maggiore, Bologna, has a timeless stillness. Although attributed in an old script to Heaphy on the old mount, it is perhaps as reminiscent of the Bologna studies of Richard Parkes Bonington as it is of Heaphy's work. It may be by neither of them, but they indeed are two of the relatively few British artists known to have visited and drawn the city in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
