Oval Landscape Composition

Oval Landscape Composition

£550
Reference

Made in grey/brown and pink washes, this is a particularly large and splendidly freely executed example of the broad wash compositions made by Varley in the late 1830s. Other oval watercolours by Varley survive, and the composition seems well suited to the format, suggesting the artist painted it as an oval.  The provenance indicates this has for long been a well-regarded work.
