William Collingwood Smith OWS
1815 - 1887
Collingwood Smith had no formal training but did receive tutoring from James Duffield Harding, initially painting in oils, but later became predominantly a watercolourist, joining the Society of Painters in Water-Colours in 1843. After becoming a full member, he served as treasurer for some twenty years. He painted extensively in Britain and on the Continent, and his work was often engraved for the Illustrated London News. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1836-55. Collingwood Smith taught many pupils at his home in Brixton, both amateurs and professionals.
