Maurice Raymond Sheppard PRWS

1947

Maurice Sheppard was born in Pembrokeshire, representing the county at the Royal National Eisteddfod, and going on to study at Loughborough and Kingston Colleges of Art, followed by the Royal College of Art. Sheppard was elected to the Royal Watercolour Society in 1974 and, after serving as Vice-President, he became the youngest President of the Society since 1819, from 1984-7. He was also a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy. Sheppard's love of the work of Samuel Palmer and one of his mentors at the Royal College of Art, Carel Weight, is reflected in the intensity and attention to natural form and detail in his landscape oils and watercolours. In 2007, Sheppard presented his collection of 600 works by 210 artists to the National Library of Wales.
