Thelma Carstensen

1906 - 1992

Of Norwegian descent, her father a timber merchant, Carstensen was born in Edmonton, London and studied at Hornsey School of Art from 1924–7, then the Slade School from 1927–30, where her teachers included Allan Gwynne-Jones, Randolph Schwabe and Norman Janes. Carstensen worked in watercolour and etching, and here has used watercolour to capture the Ulvikafjorden, a side arm of the Hardangerfjord in Norway. Carstensen, who settled in Moulsford, Oxfordshire, showed work at the Goupil Gallery, Walker’s Galleries, the Royal Academy and the New English Art Club.
