Sir Herbert Edwin Pelham Hughes Stanton RA PRWS

Herbert Hughes-Stanton was born in Chelsea and trained at Corsham, near Bath. He started exhibiting in 1886 and went on to establish a successful practice of freshly-coloured landscapes in oils and watercolour, showing at the Grosvenor Gallery, the Fine Art Society and the Paris Salon. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1913 and knighted in 1923. He was an Officier de l’Ordre Leopold II, a member of the Royal Watercolour Society from 1909 and its President from 1920-36. His son was the wood engraver, Blair Hughes-Stanton.
