Robert Hills OWS
1769 - 1844
One of the founder members in 1804 of the Society of Painters in Water-Colours, Robert Hills carved out a successful career as a painter and printmaker of farm animals and deer in rural settings. Born in Islington, near London, he studied under John Gresse and then at the Royal Academy Schools from 1788. As well as regularly featuring animals in his own landscapes in oils and watercolours, he was often asked to insert them in other artists' pictures.
