Mary Nicol Neill Armour RSA, RSW
1902 - 2000
The eldest of six children, Mary Armour studied at Hamilton Academy and the Glasgow School of Art from 1920-25. She exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, winning the Guthrie Prize in 1937, and at other major exhibitions in Scotland. After the Education Authority legislation for married women had been repealed, Armour taught still life painting at the Glasgow School of Art from 1951 to 1962. Many of her students were returning servicemen, and the enthusiasm of some of them for modern European art that they had seen in the War kindled her own interest and brought increased colour and fluency to her own work. Armou left teaching in 1962 to paint full-time, and her work was much in demand. One of Scotland's most distinguished and respected post-war artists, she was elected Honorary President of both the Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.
