Lorna Binns RWS

1914 - 2003

Lorna Binns was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, where she attended the College of Art from 1930–5, then the Royal College of Art. Although fashion was her main subject, a watercolour of hers was spotted by Paul Nash, who encouraged her to pursue her work as an artist. The outbreak of World War II prevented Lorna from achieving her ambition to enter a Paris fashion house. After a short time teaching fashion illustration at Tottenham Technical College, she returned to Yorkshire, married her former industrial design student contemporary at the Royal College, John Binns (who became head of the design school at Kingston upon Thames College of Art), and was conscripted for war work. Lorna Binns became a much-admired member of the Royal Watercolour Society (RWS). Her highly sensitive, intuitive and carefully applied use of pure colour adorned the RWS exhibitions for thirty years.
