Jean Dubois

1789 - 1849

Jean Dubois was a prominent Swiss painter and lithographer, who made some of the most striking panoramas of Swiss scenery, particular around Lake Geneva, in the early 19th century. He trained under his father, Jean Louis Albert Dubois, and worked as. a miniature painter in the studio of Conrad Linck. In 1827, with Charles Briquet, he founded a print-publishing business, devoted to producing views of Geneva and its region. He was only a few years younger than the generation of English artists, led by J M W Turner, who discovered and conveyed his native country for their home audiences. For Dubois, the Alps and Swiss scenery was home and he painted them with great topographical fidelity, but also with a sense of their majesty.
