James Ward RA
1769 - 1859
The younger brother of the engraver William Ward, James was strongly influenced by his brother-in-law, George Morland. It is as a painter of grand Romantic landscapes, particularly the vast canvas of "Gordale Scar", and of animals in various settings, that Ward is best known. James started as an engraver, trained by his brother. He went on to become a painter and was elected to the Royal Academy in 1811. Acknowledged as one of the greatest animal painters in British Art, Ward made many studies of farm animals.
