Gertrude Anna Bertha Hermes RA RE
1901 - 1983
Raised by German-born parents in rural Kent, Gertrude Hermes' adolescence passed in the backwash of World War I. The decision to choose art over farming followed a foundation year at Beckenham Art School from 1918-19, though she would return to draw the milking parlour. Gertrude was taught wood engraving and to sculpt by Leon Underwood. She married Blair Hughes-Stanton in 1926 and went on to teach wood engraving and linocutting at the Central School of Art. She joined the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and the Society of Wood Engravers and illustrated several books for Penguin.
