George Howard (9th Earl of Carlisle)

1843 - 1911

After education at Eton, George Howard trained at Heatherley's School under Alphonse Legros and became close to the Pre-Raphaelites, particularly Edward Burne-Jones. His house in Kensington, designed by Philip Webb, was a centre for the artistic illuminati, including Tennyson, Carroll, Morris, Gladstone and Browning. When, in 1889, he inherited the title, Earl of Carlisle, Howard used Morris's wallpapers to decorate Castle Howard, which came with the title.
