Adam Silo

1674 - 1760

Silo is one of our very few artists from the European Continent. Born in 1674, he worked as a carpenter, shipbuilder and eventually sea captain. From 1694, he studied with the artist Theodor van Pee and by 1697 was giving painting lessons to Peter the Great. Silo specialised in maritime painting, etching and drawing, such as this wash study. In later life, he worked as an instrument builder, making telescopes, binoculars, magnifying glasses, musical instruments, and also wax models. He wrote several books, including Drawings of Various Types of Ships and Other Vessels, 1757.
