Agnes Miller Parker RE

1895 - 1980

An engraver, illustrator and painter in oils and tempera, Parker was born in Ayrshire, spending most of her career in London and southern Britain. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1911-17, subsequently teaching there for a short period. Parker's early paintings reflect the work of the Vorticists. The main body of her work consists of wood engravings for book illustrations that demonstrate fine draughtsmanship and skilful use of black and white design. She illustrated  Aesop's Fables and Through the Woods by H. E. Bates in 1936, and her most acclaimed work, Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard by Thomas Gray, in 1938.
